It is so much easier to decide where others should go. J and I are still arguing/discussing where we should go this May:

a] Hong Kong and a fortnight's cruise from there
b] India - the hills
c] Andaman and Nicobar Islands
d] Somewhere else [strangely enough, he is finally willing to go to London]

In which case d, London.

Well, I can't say I am not looking forward to meeting all of you when I am less depressed and less liable to burst into tears. :)

I must apologise, because I only know you from your posts and comments, and I have absolutely no idea what you would enjoy doing. I chose Marrakesh because you clearly want some sun, and a bit of a different culture; and I reckoned if were picking from the list, I would rule most of them out because of dodgy regimes or dangers (Bognor, in particular).

I very nearly picked Lebanon or Istanbul; but a friend of a friend was murdered in Instanbul, which ruled that out; and Lebanon still appears a bit unstable.

True, you may want a holiday dodging the bullets.

I suggested Istanbul as, among its other features, you can sing about how the name has changed.

Have to live vicariously, and say Greece.

Oooh Marrakesh! Spices & bazaars & kasbahs & carpets & tagines & mint tea & sights & smells & bargaining & veiled ladies & everything!

But you've been there already. There are horizons to be expanded.

New York! Though flight might not be $50 unless you go via Kuwait, you will save on the hotel. Hello! Don't go to the middle East because you never know when the pesky seppos might be on a warship underneath you ready shoot you dwn if they get confused about the local timezones (this hapens).

Hmm. You can probably wear shorts and a T shirt in May and be fine actually - NY not london you know, average May temp is about 20 degrees. Swimming in the Hudson never a good idea, one goes to the rooftop pool at the top of the hotel Gansevoort to do that.

Yeah I am definitely noticing sun as a theme in there! Wise idea.

Lebanon and Syria

Hello,

I noticed that you had friended me, and was looking up a few entries (as one does) to see 'what sort of a person' you were, lol.

Lebanon is a great country - very beautiful countryside, great people, Beirut is pretty amazing, and there are some good ruins if you happen to like that sort of thing. Not at all unstable. At least, the political situation is fraught, of course, but as regards travelling it's nothing to affect you. On the other hand Syria is perhaps the more interesting in some ways (certainly the more authentically 'Middle Eastern' - Lebanon is very westernised). And Syria also has fabulous history and monuments, about which I could go on all day if anyone would let me, which sensibly they usually don't... Also, Syria may be beginning to close down to westerners (at least, they have just changed it so that you need to get a visa in advance now), so it could be a good time to go.

Of course, you could see both countries in the same trip - Lebanon's only little... It depends what you want out of your holiday, really...
