I've been burning through work all day like some inappropriate and vaguely risqué simile and I've had enough.

I almost took the opportunity to delve into the Culturemail folder, but one look was enough.... Dearie me. What on earth is going on, time was when... um... Oh scrub that actually.

I find myself wondering again if in the end places like this (I'm still trying to find an alternative to the horrible term 'blog', though I fear it's a long-lost cause) are going to replace mailing lists, still more usenet as that continues its inexorable slide into chaos, as internetwebtypethingdenizen's preferred soapboxes. I can see two major advantages: firstly I can discuss whatever I wish here and no one can bang on about "topics", secondly I have control of my comments. On the other hand, you lose something of the open and anarchic nature of the older places. Swings and roundabouts, as ever. Deep thoughts R us, that's me.

Incidentally, on comments, having seen several posts from people who have been comment-spammed, and not only on livejournal either, I have changed my settings so that all comments from those not listed as "friends" are screened. I advise you all to do the same. And on that point, with my "friends list" approaching its century, including a fair number of syndicated feeds (yes I use livejournal as an RSS reader, so there) I'm looking forward to the powers-that-be finally taking the whole idea of "friends" to bits. There's only so much one can do with filters, and it's a bit of a kludge.

Where was I...

Nowhere important, as ever. I shall go back to reading about Lady Hale (the first Law Lady, or possibly female Law Lord, I'm not sure they've thought this through yet. Lord/Lady of Appeal in Ordinary anyway. Actually, given the DCA's plans she'll probably be the only one we ever have anyway, there's a thought.)

I like the way the air smells in the first few days of the weather beginning to think about spring. Particularly in the evening, even in central London.

I also like the girl sitting opposite me here in the library (not that I even know her name...), but that's an entirely different story.

LJ comments etc

I'm happy enough just logging the IP addresses of my anonymous comments, and the option to delete them if necessary.

I read on lj_news that they are planning to implement a much better watching system, where you can get email alerts when comments are added to certain posts or threads, instead of just your own or replies to your own comments. I'll look forward to that.

As for the Friends, I wish they'd just change the name. Being reminded that I say I am a friend of someone (usually an RSS feed) that doesn't consider me a friend is not very good for the ego, I think.

And that reminds me of Emmet's "Friends Policy" - to paraphrase, he says something like: I might be friends with you in real life but that doesn't mean I'm interested in reading what you have to say.

Speaking of the DCA did you see Armando Iannuci putting the boot into Falconer whilst he was pimping Yes Minister?
