Just ran over to the library to pick up a copy of that fascinating work Byles on the Law of Bills of Exchange and Cheques for weekend light reading. On my way out, a large group of people were queuing up in the adjoining passage to enter the hall for, evidently, a black tie dinner (I know not who they were, the hall is available for hire to all sorts of groups).

The combined perfume of a couple of hundred women in evening wear, in a fairly small space, is something quite incredible to... besmell (?)

(sorry). Is NY cold. Was about this weekend when I was last there, with K, and the coldest I have ever ever been in my life.

Oh god, Byles. I recommend also purchasing a good bottle of whisky. At my old firm, there was a rule that we were allowed to drink it in the office if instructed to do research in that book (although I have to admit it's the best of the bunch - the topic is just impossible).
