Nov. 24th, 2003 07:25 pmI've been vaguely intrigued by the many new ways of updating livejournal emerging at present. I really find it rather difficult to imagine a situation in which I had something so pressing, so vital, to say here that I couldn't wait for the next time I had access to a keyboard and an internet connection but had to send it in by text message or phone call...
Be that as it may, I was interested enough to look into updating by telephone, but since all of the available numbers for recording a post are in the US at present I think that's a nono. Still, it's been fun to put some voices to the words, and maybe that's point enough.
I find it difficult to take this place too seriously though. The idea that blogs, and livejournal's model in particular, will render redundant all forms of internet communication save instant messaging (which I never use), I find ridiculous. To take the obvious example for anyone reading this used to usenet or mailing lists such as the Culture, the comments section of a post is hardly comparable.
Still, who am I to judge. Yet.
My plans to visit Georgia and Armenia next spring or summer may have to be delayed by the little local difficulties, which is a shame. Rob has been talking about taking a villa in Croatia, which is presumably safer by now, and the cost does seem quite ridiculously cheap. I suspect there will turn out to be something dodgy about the deal, and there'll be another revolution while we're there, but it sounds like the genesis of a plan.
