Oct. 2nd, 2003 01:02 pm6.50 and the first alarm goes.
7.05 and the second alarm goes.
7.10 and the long stop alarm goes. Cunningly, it's positioned on the other side of the room, after a string of incidents where it was switched off by a semi-slumbering arm.
He lies there until it becomes just too annoying, then, moving fast before the subconscious can override the body, lurches from his bed, reaches up and stops it.
Into the next room and he turns on the radio, the dulcet tones of James Naughtie fill the air.
Into the kitchen and, moving simply by force of habit, he fills the coffee pot, grinds the beans, switches it on. This semi-automatic process has failed before, coffee grounds have ended up in the water compartment and water in the filter, but on this occasion all is well. And back to bed as Today meanders on.
First cigarette, first coffee, second cigarette, second coffee, third cigarette and it's 7.45. Normally he'd endure Thought for the Day, remain there until 8.10 and the conclusion of the news, but this is a court day and an early one at that. The dubious pleasures of David Blunkett are foregone for an early shower.
Eventually, out of the door.
Half-lines form...
"Have you seen a copy of this letter..." [doesn't matter if he says yea or nay]. Could you read the third paragraph, starting "we therefore confirm.."
"Thankyou, no further questions.." [no that won't work. Have to put in the other letters. Ask when the demands were sent.. when the hell were the demands sent actually...?]
Madam, at this point I should refer the court to the case of X.. blah, no that won't work and it sounds pompous.
You're a barrister. Being pompous is in the job description.
Crap. Courts don't react well, particularly not lower courts....
And over the bridge.. what a tosser parking there, nothing can get past.
Into the station, down the stairs....
Crowded, this is why I never take tubes before 9 if I can help it. Where do I want to be, want to get away from the press of people at this end, plus it's the back end of the train, I'll want to be at the front end at KingsX, hang on why KingsX, Euston'll do, but I still want Bank branch...
First Bank train rammed, I've time, I'll wait.
I wonder what would have happened if Asquith and the cabinet had the nerve to push on with the naval campaign in the Dardanelles.
hang on, here she comes, only semi-rammed, it'll do.
Paper headlines on the frozen embryos case, well, not a surprising result, probably right legally, it'd take the Lords to do something that drastic. But right morally, I dunno, they made a strong point on the radio this morning. If the embryos were in their wombs and not in a freezer, would a court order an abortion? Obviously not. But then, why should the men be fathers if they don't want to be. Unless you say they're fathers already, in which case you're back in the abortion argument.
Oooh, she's cute.
Madam, this case has been one where the right and the left hand of the Claimant have not simply been unaware of one another, they've been beating one another up.
No, that's crap, a confused metaphor, and you aren't Rumpole. Stick to the matter at hand.
She's really cute.
He looks worried. Money?
Oh shit, we're getting full now. Why don't people move down the carriage, it's not that complicated.
That girl looks a bit like N.
Was a shit with N really. Why did I do that?
Because you were still obsessed with Y.
Odd fingers she has. Odd watch too.
He's falling asleep.
Madam, the facts of this case do not appear to be in dispute. My client...
What's he reading? Oh help, he's reading Mormon literature.
How many Orthodox Jews can I see reading the Torah... one, two, three,
Change at Euston. Want to be at that end, two thirds of the way along this poster and I should be right by the door when it arrives.
Shit, it's[Z]. Quick hide. Don't want to talk.
He's lost in Metro anyway.
New Economist advert. Hmm. Not one of their best.. "If they made a film of your life, would it go straight to video".
This case could really fuck up.
Need more coffee.
I wonder what they're all thinking. How would they sum me up...?

Date: 2003-10-02 06:28 am (UTC)The above is all almost verbatim, so far as I can remember it, the only alteration to reality is the bit about standing 2/3 of the way along a particular poster, which applies most days when I'm heading for chambers, but not this morning.

Date: 2003-10-02 07:23 am (UTC)I'm now going to have to observe my own morning thoughts to see do they compare (probably not, although there will be more drunk people on my public transport)
