Well, that was fun.
I've never been confident enough of my own skills as either an academic lawyer or an advocate to think so before, but the barrister representing the other side in that hearing was appallingly bad. Didn't seem to have a clue what their point was, and all the papers in a mess. Fairly significant case financially too.
Ho hum.

I started reading Pepys diary here recently (RSS feed at pepysdiary) and never fail to be at least mildly amused by something in it. Today's smirk was raised by:
"we were sworn justices of peace for Middlesex, Essex, Kent, and Southampton; with which honour I did find myself mightily pleased, though I am wholly ignorant in the duty of a justice of peace."
Hah.

There's an extraordinary general meeting of the Bar Council here in Lincoln's Inn tonight, using both halls and a videolink. Shortly put, this is about QCs, the Powers That Be have decided that the bar should defend the continued existence of silks to the hilt. Some members of the junior bar said "hang on, why?" but the Council went ahead with its public position anyway. So, after much rather bitter debate there's now a meeting, not on the substantive point but to try and force a ballot on it. Ho hum. I'm not sure what my position on the point is and frankly have better things to do which don't involve hanging around here till 6 when I have no other reason to do so.
