Sep. 23rd, 2003 04:34 pmThere's a load of waffle sitting on the laptop, but the current status of the work on Chamber's network seems to be that no one can connect to anything and I'm confined to the Lincoln's Inn library machines. Bring back pigeon post I say. In the meantime, you're spared my inane meanderings.
As I walked back to my flat yesterday evening, the sun finally came out as it was setting, and behind me, arching over North London, there was briefly a rainbow. Pretentious I may be, but I truly did find myself thinking:
The fields from Islington to Marybone,
To Primrose Hill and Saint John's Wood,
Were builded over with pillars of gold;
And there Jerusalem's pillars stood.
though I'm not entirely sure what Ken would have to say. London is a grim place, but just sometimes one sees what the man meant.
I worked at home once again this morning. What I actually did was make some effort at sorting out the flat. The contents of my rucksack had simply been emptied onto the pre-existing rubble, and though I'd done all the washing and put it away, the rest was still there, with Added New Detritus. How much do cleaners cost again?
What caused me to do something about this was the realisation that I really ought to file my tax return this week and it was somewhere under everything, along with at least one credit card bill, an electoral registration form, and several unopened Economists, TLSs, and LRBs.
So I sat there and waded through it all. A major breakthrough was made when I came to the conclusion that having lapsed in the checking of each and every card receipt against my statement a year ago but not in the collection and retention of them, I was never, ever, going to do it, so that was one pile of Things to Do straight into the bin. I shall regret it, probably, but it's done now.
I went out for a coffee before starting, as I only had enough for two cups in the house. Autumn started today and, for once, it seemed to notice in the air. There are already piles of leaves to kick through on the streets, and sitting outside was just that little bit colder than it had been.
