Bah, and, as I have been known to say on occasion, humbug.
The weather is gloomy; my tan is fading by the minute; I have no work at the moment (but am waiting for the brief on a scaryhugedrafting job); I can't seem to stop spending money on boring things (pensions, food, electricity, that kind of thing); I can't justify buying any of the new books I want (Lirael is finally out in UK hardback, as is the second Hearn Japanese thing, also the second in Allan Massie's Evening of the World sequence, also the pb of M. John Harrison's Light, also the third in Zindell's new trilogy, also, also...); and a solicitor who sends me an enormous amount of small work is apparently not happy with me. Don't ask. Cockup on a conference a couple of months ago where it transpired I had received only half the papers, together with an unfortunate situation where the only avenue open to my client, a sub-contractor, was to sue those who had contracted him for a 100% contribution... that party being, unbeknown to me, very important clients of my instructing solicitors and the people actually footing the bill for the con...

I went to the Proms again last night: Israel Phil under Zubin Mehta, Stravinsky: Symphony in Three Movements; Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade; Stravinsky: Petrushka. I thought it was a good concert, by and large, but others didn't agree, particularly on Petrushka. I was going to go to the late night tonight but frankly I'm too tired and fed up even for Anne-Sophie von Otter.

Is this any good? He churns out the usual fantasy tropes (mythical object of power, immortal Devil-type thing) but does he do anything different or has it all been done before?

Not that I know anything about Zindell, other than the fact that _Neverness_ and the Requiem For Homo Sapiens trilogy are good. I own them, but have yet to read them. Anyway...
