Apparently the bookies have cut the odds on the temperature hitting 100 in London this week (I make no apologies for the fact I think in F incidentally). I'm not sure they aren't too late, though word is this is the last of it.
Anyway, I'd consider this a pretty good day sun-wise if I were somewhere Mediterranean. Stuck in central London trying to work on a trial for next week it's somewhat less pleasant. However, I've actually spent most of the day so far in the shady recesses of Court 35 in the RCJ listening to a very abstruse case, in what used to be called the Motions Court but is now called the Applications Court because that's more with it and "relevant".
I lie. I've spent most of the day half-asleep in Court 35. Nevermind. I wasn't actually involved in the case, it's just semi-relevant to something.
I have this funny feeling that I shall make an executive decision to end my working day at around 5 (instead of the more usual 7) today, and find somewhere in Primrose Hill with gin, tonic, and a beer garden. And ice. Oh yes, there shall be ice.
Currently reading: The Athenian Murders. The most self-consciously and deliberately up its own arse novel I have ever come across, I think. I don't think I remember any other novel that quite obviously and precisely deconstructs itself in footnotes (let's face it, footnotes aren't that common in novels). I suppose Lawrence Norfolk's In the shape of a boar does something not too different. The distinction is that In the shape of a boar is so turgid it's unreadable, whereas this is rather fun, if you like that kind of thing.
Oh, and re-reading The death and life of Miguel de Cervantes, Stephen Marlowe. I have never knowingly met anyone else who's read this, which is a shame, because I love it.

I just finished The Athenian Murders, and rather enjoyed it. The footnoting got to me a bit too, but everything becomes clear in the end... there's a rather clever twist.

Actually, that Marlowe book is on my "to buy" list. I've no idea how it got there, however, so I suspect you probably had something to do with it.
