Can anyone who has read much Agatha Christie bring themselves to believe that Miss Marple would ever allow the phrase "you were in a relationship" to pass her lips? Honestly, this series is descending to utter drivel.

Oh, dear God. To whom does she say this? I miss Joan Hickson

ISTR one of them mentioning Marple's decided (if private) disdain for her nephew's books, which were invariably full of grubby romantic heroes and heroines and That Sort Of Thing.

I can say with some relief that I've never seen any of the new ones; Joan Hickson was the definitive Marple in my book.

Joan Hickson is definitive to the extent that I simply won't watch anybody else playing Miss Marple. She is so excellent at conveying "you'd be surprised at how sordid and depraved a little English village can be"

Agree that Joan Hickson had that role taped - she had the perfect balance of acid, sharp, busybody with empathy and kindness within the standards of the day. I retain a fondness for the old Margaret Rutherfords but Hickson was a jump closer to the character I read in the books.

I'm a fan of Geraldine McEwan, adored her in Mapp and Lucia but these productions are simply awful. I've seen two now, last night's being the second and I have no idea what planet the dramatists were from but it wasn't planet '30s or even planet postwar. If they want to put the stories in a modern setting then do so but this half mashed mess of styles and ages simply puts my teeth on edge.

Oh, that series is total crap. I can't work out why so many talented character actors are willing to be associated with it. But what really hurt about last night's episode was the fact that they stuck Richard Armitage in a wheelchair for most of it. Why????? Why??????
