The silly season is evidently upon us if we’re back to chasing Lord Lucan.

Mr Woodgate also pointed out he was five inches shorter than Lord Lucan and, at 62, is 10 years younger than the aristocrat would be now....

“[Retired Scotland Yard detective Sidney Ball] told me that I was not Lord Lucan. I said ‘I know that’,” Mr Woodgate said.

I wish people would tell me I'm not Lord Lucan more often.

i can remember (many moons ago) attending a union branch meeting 'n' (in the pub arfterwards) getting a distinctly frosty reception to some lord lucan jokes/comments i woz making...

...i remember later wishing that they'd 'ave told me that 'lucky' lucan 'ad been one of the branch activist's fav 'uncle' when she woz a lil' girl...'n' both that she remainded utterly convinced of 'is innocence, 'n' that 'er family were the prime suspects in assisting 'is escape from blighty.

If I remember rightly, Private Eye always thought Jimmy Goldsmith was involved, in fact I have a vague recollection that it was mixed up with the allegations that led to Goldsmith's libel writ (but it's a long time since I read Ingrams Goldenballs) Possibly that Goldsmith had helped get them out and that Wilson knew and approved. All to do with the circle round Aspinall, which also included Tiny Rowland.

Lucan was declared dead by the High Court for ordinary civil purposes in about 1999 or 2000 I think, but for peerage purposes the House of Lords wouldn't accept it (so Lucan junior didn't get to take the seat before the House of Lords reforms). It was noticed by Scotland Yard (which still kept the file open, then if not now) that around that time several members of the family visited South Africa, separately.

my old comrade L[incidentally the best bleedin' union activist i ever met]'s family were part of that circle of upper clarss, 'eavy drinking, gamblers. i met 'em a couple of times, 'n' they were questioned being the larst people ter see lord lucan 'alive'.
