Just saw that Studio Ghibli have an Earthsea film (fairly clearly an adaptation of The Farthest Shore) coming out this July. After the mini-series fiasco (which I admit I never felt the urge to see, but everyone I know who did was appalled) my immediate instinct is scepticism, but Studio Ghibli have a deservedly high reputation.

Funny you should mention Earthsea. I need to write about the correspondence between the magic of True Names and the object-capability approach to computer security...

I feel the same as you - I saw about a minute of the mini series and I'm glad I didn't waste any more time on it. Studio Ghibli are extremely unlikely to do worse, and even if it deviates totally from the plot the film will still be worth watching (as was Howl's Moving Castle).

It's looking good:

Although I note that the people are white; given UKL's anger at that decision for the mini-series, I wonder what she'll think of this.

The synopsis appears to incorporate aspects of Tehanu as well - an odd choice as that was a rather dark character study.

Apparently, Orson Scott Card has run into similiar problems in his quest to make the "Ender's Game" movie. He wants the demographics of the kids at the Battle School to mirror those of the world as a whole; Hollywood apparently feels that that's too many Brown People for one movie. :-P
