Ou sont les scandales d'antan?

He seems to have spent the last 40 years quietly doing charity work. Where are the rest of them... googling: Ward killed himself of course. Rice-Davies lives* in America. Keeler lives in north London. And Ivanov was "recalled to Moscow and never heard of again"...

Beats dodgy mortgages any day. No one will ever make a film about the Jowell affair (ooh, maybe he will go down: see here if you don't understand this story yet), nor will it give rise to an image that signified an era(though thinking about it, that might be in Berlusconi's line, particularly if you buy Boris' take).

*Hah. Original typo of "lies" now corrected. He would say that, wouldn't he?

The picture of Christine Keeler (I think it was her... apologies if it was Mandy Rice Davies) is so iconic. It really brightened an otherwise surreal Friday afternoon (an afternoon which really had me thinking I am on a different planet to the rest of the world).

Yesterday, I noticed a poster for "Basic Instinct 2" with Sharon Stone in the same pose as Christine Keeler on the chair. Whereas Keeler looked sexy and sophisticated, thought Stone just looked tarty.

There was that centred stillness about Keeler, particularly in that iconic photograph. My only acquaintance with the scandal was via Flanders and Swann ("No smoke without fire. Nil combustibus pro fumo) which my parents explained to me plainly and simply at the time (whatever our difficulties, I've always appreciated their frank and open approach to questions; I remember my father, having got back from a holiday in Hampshire, expressing his irritation at a schoolmaster in a Nelson exhibition wriggling on the tines of his charges demanding to know who Emma, Lady Hamilton was: "I wanted to say, "tell them she was his mistress, for God's sake, man! Is it that difficult?"

Now, I'm thinking of doing a law conversion course. Would this be a foolish idea? It's a very embryonic thought still... hope you're well x
