Is this the moment to point out my regular wavering at election time is purely between Tory and LibDem, and I did indeed vote Tory at the last election, very much hoping against hope they would make it?
The opposition proved highly effective yesterday, though, in reminding that leader that politics is the art of the possible, not the art of nailing jelly to the wall. It's a pity that so many of them had to vote against their principles to do it, but that's politics.
If you seriously consider New Labour to be the good guys, and Tony Blair to be more than a lame duck as leader, there's no hope for you. Frankly I think they're the most abhorrent bunch to run this country in about a hundred and thirty years.
I don't think that many of the Tories were voting against their principles either. There are still plenty of Tories who believe that the idea the state's power's should always be minimal is far, far, more important that the authoritarians and centralisers.
Hmm, not much chance we'll agree on this. 1. Blair announced he was standing down what, a year ago? Hard to be a lame duck under those conditions. 2. The most abhorrent bunch in 130 years? We obviously spent the 80's in different countries, if not different worlds. And that's the 1980s, for the avoidance of doubt. 3. The Tory party believing the state's power should be minimal? As it was at Greenham, say, or Orgreave, or in the Spycatcher case? Pull the other one, son, it's connected to St Clements...
I must admit, I don't recognise these kinder, gentler Tories, bringin harmony where there is dicord, truth where there is error and despair where there is hope. Oh, no, wait a minute, I HAVE heard it before - outside Number 10 in 1979.
As I say, not much room for a meeting of minds, but at least we can laugh about those happy days of the miners strike, poll tax riots and mass unemployment. At least the Home Secretary wasn't resigning because he'd been caught with his hands in the till, eh?

Is it just me, or is the spectacle of the Tory Party - Guardians of Liberty nauseating everyone else too?
