Joff's Joffeoke last night (I seem to remember singing It's A Sin from a comatose position) and as a result didn't stagger home until 3 (to taxi driver: "take me to Primrose Hill please" "Que?" "Oh, soddit, just go to Camden Town"). Came round around 12.30 and promptly off to SimonG's for his afternoon party: glad to see Joff and H were in worse states than I was. Grand time at both, but I hate the feeling of sobering up before going to bed, particularly when trying to (a) cook dinner and (b) think about leasehold enfranchisement and extension at the same time.

Next weekend Glastonbury... at some point I'm going to be crying out for a weekend of doing nothing, I can feel it.

I have a horrible feeling that when I put the tent away last summer in Mystra I thought to myself "oh, I really must deal with X when I'm home", X being, possibly, an eye that needs replacing. Ooops.

Currently reading Edward Whittemore's Jerusalem Quartet: intriguing but I have no firm conclusions on whether it's a neglected masterpiece or a train wreck yet. Oh, and read, on MartinL's recommendation, Varjak Paw, before giving it to Simon as his birthday present (I always do this when buying presents): despite my usual, and I admit somewhat kneejerk, dislike for anthropomorphia, it really is a good bit of work. Reminded me of 101 Dalmatians more than anything, though I'm not entirely sure why except that's another exception to my dislike for such stuff.

If you liked 101 Dalmatians

Primrose Hill is a fitting place to live. Visited it with my copy of the book last time I was in London. I actually scouted around the foot of the hill for a likely Dearly residence and climbed to the top and tried to figure out where Pongo and Missis would have stood for the Starlight Barking. But then, I also went to Oxford in 1998 with a copy of The Ready-Made Family and traced Nicola's steps through Oxford.

I'm like that.

Indeed. When I first moved to London, I was sitting up there one evening and two Dalmations passed me by.

I got very strange looks for the next few days when I said I saw a pair of Dalmations at dusk on Primrose Hill until finally one of my friends reciprocated with "Oh I LOVE that book!"

Didn't hear any barking - must have been a quiet night on the grapevine. Possibly the Great Dane was too comfortable by the fire?

On my reccomendation?

I've not even read it! I just like the cover.

I'll be reading it now though and at least I seem to have (inadvertantly) succeeded in my quest.

I'm reading that right now...

... since the book I was reading (John Varley's Red Thunder) got nicked along with my car keys, my house keys, my diary, my A-Z and a few tickets from Jessops when my bag was taken last night. Fucker.

Anyway, it's good so far, though there is a basic inconsistency between the way in which Varjak refers to the outside world. Cars are big metal monsters, but an iron fire escape is an iron fire escape, even though he's seen neither during his sheltered time in the Contessa's house. It's not bothering me all that much, but it niggles from time to time.

I bought the Jerusalem Quartet (I assume you bought the reprints) on Emmett's recommendation. Obviously I haven't read it yet, so I'd be interested to hear your opinion on it.

Bad luck dude. Look on it not so much as a loss, but a tiny victory in the never-ending battle with your Lal-pile. And I bet the A-Z was out of day anyway.

I bought that damn A-Z a month ago! And I was enjoying Red Thunder! Argh. Bollocks. I ranted about it in my latest LJ entry.

Commiserations.

I'm glad to see I appear to be some sort of master book pimp. Have you read Bunker 13 by Aniruddha Bahal?

I saw it a couple of weeks ago, in WHSmith of all places. It's on my to-buy list, and Waterstones have included in a 3 for 2 so I'll be buying it soon enough though perhaps I should read Catch-22 beforehand.

3 For 2

This is indeed my reason for asking. Varjak Paw is in it too. However knowing that you were thinking about buying it, along with every other book every published, isn't that helpful.

Yes, but I already have Varjak Paw so that isn't actually helpful. :P

A friend of mine has a Lalpile of DVDs. He just buys them as they come out and never gets around to watching even half of them. Most are still in their plastic wrappers.

I realise you have it, however I don't. Hence the whole point of this thread.

I must admit I have bought and not watched Lantana (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259393/) and Bully (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0242193/).

Sorry. Brain slightly muddled still after last night.
I still have to watch a couple of anime box sets (Escaflowne and Evangelion) and a few movies like Hana-Bi.

Also, I thought that I was the only one who took the piss by reading a book before giving it as a present to a friend.

An eye that needs replacing?

I'm hoping that an eye is a tent-related technical term. Otherwise, you are in trouble, my friend.
