I'm trying to write something new, but I'm horribly lacking in ideas. I sometimes fear that all the imagination has been leached out of me by now, and that I'm left a withered and dessicated husk. That, of course, implies I had imagination to begin with, and maybe even that's too much to claim.

I can manage to come up with first lines, and sometimes even characters, but they don't seem to do anything. Bah, humbug. Sometimes I think I have ideas, only to realise, in some embarrassment, that they are actually memories of books read long ago.

Maybe I should talk to Joff about collaborating on the Sequel. Having said that, it might be a good idea to do something with the first one first....

This afternoon's excitement has been caused by a demonstration. I don't know for a fact what it's about but I suspect it is, once again, the Fathers For Justice Group. Apparently some of them managed to scale to roof of the RCJ yesterday, though that may be apocryphal as it doesn't seem to have been mentioned on the news.

Ah well. I've just emailed my opinion to my solicitors, for their delectation over their morning coffee tomorrow, and I'm off to face the delights of the truncated London Underground. I don't like using the Jubilee all the time. I have the feeling that they all look down on us poor exiles from the scummy Northern Line.

Who said I was paranoid? Own up.

Us Jubilee kittens do not look down on you at all - we feel your pain!

Writing is odd. I am consumed by a story that I'm writing at the moment, some of the time, and other times I cannot think of anything to say, and when I do try I get this horrid stilted prose. Mind, it's been going well, if not that fast, for two months. I have hope for my novel.

If you have characters then writing about them - who they are, what they like doing, where they live - can kickstart something bigger, because they can develop a mind of their own and run off havving amazing adventures.

I've heard [livejournal.com profile] sgloomi say that the thing to do if you have lots of ideas, but nothing to flesh them out with, is to write them all down, put them in a box and open it again in a few years' time to see if you can do more with them then. Rinse, repeat etc. It seems to work for him - some of his published novels have been based on things that had been in the box since not long after leaving school, by the sound of it.

I've almost completely given up on writing anything that isn't non-fiction. Not that I wrote much in the first place. I have great ideas for settings and situations, characters and dialogue I find very easy, but I just can't combine them into a plot.

Having said that, I'm thinking of dramatising some parts of the Gunpowder Plot. The Earl of Salisbury would have to be played as Tony Blair.
