Had a good night drinking with Clanwilliam yesterday, which made this morning mildly difficult, though I wasn't exactly hungover.
For want of anything better I've been flipping through Umberto Eco's Travels in Hyperreality on the tube, his oldest collection of essays I think. Full of fascinating stuff on American museums (and their tendency to blur the edges between the real and the reconstruction), the psychological effects of wearing blue jeans, and medievalism. Nevertheless, I think it's going to have to be Foyles on the way home. There really ought to be a Bookbuyers Anonymous.
I did actually start writing something new for the first time in ages the other day, but I'm not sure where it's going. Quite possibly the bin.
Out to dinner tomorrow with the various people who are coming to Greece, which should be fun. I'm not entirely sure what Mongolian food entails, that having been chosen because Adele is riding across the Gobi desert or somesuch between now and Greece. Presumably it's vaguely like Chinese.

I'm still thinking about this article by Rich from the Culture. In part I suppose my heart agrees with him, but I'm not entirely sure why it matters if the universe ends up without life. It seems a kind of variant of the ontological fallacy. To put it another way, to whom does it matter? But I've already said this elsewhere. In the end, I think that what matters is that each individual in their time should be able to live their life to the full, should be able to exercise their imagination and creativity, not that life, or the human race, should continue forever.

I'm tired, I'm feeling grumpy (not entirely sure why) and it's 6:30 on a Friday. Balls to this, I'm going home.

Umberto Eco is da man, even if Travels in hyperreality is getting kinda creaky these days. Still fun, though.
