From what I understand, he didn't ask to be taken permanently off the job, he was concerned for his safety. Quite why is unclear, but his bosses seemed to agree with him, which is why they let him move temporarily. From what I understand he's back doing the job again now.
The more I hear about this, the more I don't think anyone really knows enough about it to comment authoratively (except the police, obv).
